Acura plans to expand its North American lineup with three SUVs over the coming years. The automaker will begin its offensive in the first half of 2028 with a model tailored for outdoor activities. A fourth-generation RDX featuring a hybrid powertrain will follow the same year, while a new eight-passenger SUV is currently in development.
Presented this week, the roadmap also includes the development of a V6 hybrid powertrain. Acura says it wants to occupy new segments and offer more vehicles capable of meeting customer needs over time.
An SUV for the outdoors, and another for families
The first of the new models is set to arrive in the first half of 2028. Acura describes it as an SUV adapted for outdoor adventures, combining capabilities for those activities with the comfort and technologies associated with the brand.
The automaker isn’t sharing details regarding name, dimensions or powertrain. We’ll have to wait to learn its exact positioning within the lineup and the nature of its capabilities.
Acura is also working on an SUV built to accommodate up to eight occupants. It will be the largest vehicles ever offered by the brand and take position in the lineup above the MDX, which currently seats seven.
For the automaker, the new full-size model’s mandate is to meet the demand for more spacious family vehicles in the premium market. No launch date has been announced as of yet.
The RDX going hybrid in 2028
Acura had previously announced a new, fourth-generation RDX, set to go on sale in 2028. We now know it will become the first Acura model to use the company’s two-motor hybrid technology.
The brand hasn’t released figures regarding output, fuel consumption or pricing. But the announcement confirms that hybridization will form a key part of the next stage in the model's renewal.
In parallel, Acura is developing a new V6 hybrid powertrain intended for its D-segment models. The automaker states it aims to combine sporty performance, enhanced towing capacity and improved fuel efficiency. Which vehicles will get this powertrain isn’t yet known. Also for another day is the timeline for their introduction.
