James Glickenhaus is said to be one of the greatest car collectors in the world- and he's just become the first American customer to receive an Alfa Romeo. The very first Alfa 8C Competizione destined for the US market has wound up in Glickenhaus's hands, after arriving in Connecticut.

The car was handed over at Miller Motorcars, where the proud owner immediately road-tested it. Just five hundred of the machines will be produced- so exclusivity is a given. Designed by the Alfa Romeo Style Centre, styling is described as a modernized look that ties into the brand's historical past.

The shape is sweeping and elegant, packing a distinctive front and rear fascia that are sure to be recognized instantly. Carbon fiber is used extensively to keep weight to minimal levels.

Power comes from a Ferrari-assembled 4.7 liter V8 engine with 450 horsepower and a six-speed automated manual gearbox. Redline is 7,500 RPM, and performance is enriched by a variable valve timing system. Owners can expect 0-60 in a tick over 4 seconds, and a top-speed in the 180 mph ballpark.

84 other 8C Competiziones will be sent to US customers by the end of the year. Not surprisingly, the model won't be available in Canada.
