Acura announced in Detroit during the IndyCar/ALMS Grand Prix that it will build and race two LMP1-category cars next season. De Ferran Motorsport and Patron Highcroft Racing will field one car each next year.

The two teams have entered Acura LMP2 cars in 2008.

Acura's entry in the most powerful ALMS category will feature a pair of Acura ARX-02a prototype sports car developed by Honda Performance Development and Wirth Research in England.

HPD President Erik Berkman did not want to unveil if the new car would be a turbo diesel powerplant or a gasoline engine. He also pinpointed that Acura-Honda would not race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the near future.

Two LMP2 Acuras will be raced in the ALMS LMP2 category next year. One will be entered by Lowe's Fernandez Racing while the second car will be run by a team to be announced later.
