Guy Smith was the fastest driver around Baltimore's new 3.3km street circuit during qualifying.
He therefore took pole position in his LMP1 Dyson Racing's Lola-Mazda with a lap in 1min27.750s. Chris Dyson will be his teammate for the race.
Electrical problems sidelined Dyson's racing main rival, Aston Martin Racing Muscle Milk. This effectively forces drivers Romain Dumas and Klaus Graf to start the Saturday race from the back of the grid.
Dirk Werner took pole in the GT class. He placed his BMW M3 GT up the leader board for BMW Team Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (BMW RRL) with a lap time of 1min31.362s. He will share driving duties with teammate Bill Auberlen.
Gunnar Jeannette beat Canadian Kyle Marcelli to LMPC pole, but only by 0.066s.
In GTC, it was left to Tim Pappas and Jeroen Bleekemolen to take first place.
