Porsche also gets recognition this year for its SUV model, which, it’s sometimes hard to remember, was actually pretty coldly received by many brand purists back in the day. Water under the bridge, obviously, as the Macan has helped Porsche sales soar in the past few years. It helps that the small SUV conducts itself like a car – a Porsche car – when cornering and on twisty roads.

To the folks at Car and Driver, it matters not a whit that the Macan actually shares a number of components with mass-market models within the Volkswagen Group. It’s still a Porsche, and it acts like one.

What C&D liked:

- Drives like a very sporty car
- Its small size and great agility make it hot-hatch-like
- Hugs the road like there’s no tomorrow
- Practical when you need it to be
