We’d classify this is the surprise of this year’s list – not because of any lack of quality, but because there just aren’t that many of them on our roads. Then we remind ourselves that C&D’s annual list is not designed as a popularity contest, not at all. Rather, the panel of experts at the magazine applauded improvements made to the model for just its second year back on the market. Kudos to Toyota for wanting to get things right, on a model that was already pretty darn good.

What C&D liked:

- More power from the 3.0L turbo engine this year
- New entry-level model that’s no slouch either
- Both engines (BMW-sourced, by the way) get big thumbs-up for their low-end torque and raw power
- Great acceleration
- And yet, surprisingly decent fuel economy
- Effervescent on-road handling
- Improved steering
