Subaru BRZ / Toyota GR 86
The near-twins from the Japanese partners Subaru and Toyota get a joint mention on the 2022 honour list. Weaknesses from previous iterations were fixed and greatly improved the ride delivered by the two models.
What C&D liked:
- The engine both use Subaru’s 2.4L flat-four, and it now delivers improved mid-range chops; these cars are now simply more muscular than previous
- Road grip is greatly improved
- 6-speed manual in the offering
- Directional headlights
- Affordable for what they deliver
“Somehow, Subaru and Toyota grew the BRZ and the GR 86 into formidable sports cars without abandoning the essential qualities that made them so endearing in the first place.”
- Car and Driver
