The penultimate round of the 2012 Andros Trophy ice racing series is held this weekend at the Geoparc of St-Die des Vosges in France. The qualifying heats were staged Friday night.

Benjemin Riviere, driving a private Skoda Fabia, has been pretty impressive in the last few races, climbing up to third place in the overall standings. Friday, Riviere set the fastest time during the timed session and then ran with the leaders during the qualifying heats.

Another competitor who made great progress recently is Franck Lagorce, member of the Skoda France team. Lagorce won his qualifying heat and also won the Elite finale later that night.

The other top drivers of the series – Alain Prost (Dacia), Olivier Panis (Skoda) and Jean-Philippe Dayraut (MINI) – all drove carefully to avoid mistakes and save fresh tires for the finals.

Canadian Jacques Villeneuve again had problems during the qualifying heats, ranking a low 18th. However, he won the first Elite finale in front of his teammate at Skoda France, Paul Belmondo.

Franck Lagorce won the Elite Sup finale, putting an end to this first day of action.

The finals are held today (Saturday).
