Volvo's next-generation S60 concept is set to be unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show early next year as a fairly clear indication of what the 2010 production model will look like.

A photo has been released, showcasing a daring, sleek and exciting silhouette. A tapered 'double-wave' beltline runs the length of the car from the headlight to taillight, rising slightly to accommodate the large turbine-shaped wheels and fenders surrounding them.

Headlights show a wind-swept look, and doors appear to be hinged at the outsides- opening from the middle. It's a coupe-inspired silhouette, backed by a promise to deliver a sporty driving experience like no Volvo yet.

"We both can and dare to deliver even more exciting and more dynamic designs while retaining our grip on the lead position with regard to safety. The concept car shows part of our future, it's a hint that the all-new S60 will be one of the strongest contenders in the CD premium segment," says Stephen Odell, President and CEO at Volvo Cars.

Few details are known of the new S60's interior, though Volvo has already worked with a Swedish Glassworks to create a 'floating' centre console in crystal, which may be indicative of an interior styling element when the vehicle goes on sale.

Steve Mattin, Design Director at Volvo, says "in a concept car the aim is to give your imagination a free rein and our iconic super-slim centre stack was the perfect object. Using pure crystal is a thrilling experiment. We may well see interior features in crystal-like materials in the future".
