Audi has just become the first automaker to be granted a permit to operate autonomous vehicles on the public roads of Nevada.

Google and automotive supplier Continental also received a licence in the past few months.

You may remember that an autonomous Audi TTS made its mark on the legendary Pikes Peak Hill Climb course in Colorado back in 2010, completing all 156 turns and 20 kilometres in 27 minutes with no driver intervention whatsoever.

Similar to Google and Continental, Audi's car will likely wear a special red license plate with an infinity sign (∞).

The German automaker will detail its technology and future plans at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which is currently taking place in Las Vegas until Friday.
