After confirming that a CSL variant of the BMW 1 M was still on the table, product manager James Morrison has made another public statement, this time hinting at the fact that the German manufacturer may produce diesel-powered Ms.

“We never say never,” he said. He thinks BMW “will always look to the best solution for the best performance and everyday usability” rather than stay stuck in the past.

He also noted that 65 to 70% of the Series 1 cars sold use diesel, highlighting the importance of that market for BMW.

Similarly, Car and Driver noted that Audi will be offering diesel versions of the S6 and S7, without going into further detail.

A trend seems to be emerging, with automakers turning more and more to diesel technologies even for high-performance products.

After all, diesel engines are known as fuel-efficient torque monsters. And fuel efficiency is particularly relevant at the moment, especially with consumption standards getting stricter around the world.
