Will Canadians Ever See the Diminutive Audi A2?

Though not sold in North America, at least not yet, Audi's smallest car has just experienced a growth spurt. At initial launch, only two A2 models existed, but now this number has grown more than twice over to a total of five models.

Ranging from the most basic yet efficient gasoline models, to the extensively modified A2 '3L' super economy car, the diminutive Audi welcomes yet another engine to the family, a 1.4-liter TDI diesel with 90 horsepower. To spot the difference, you'll have to scour the rear end for the little red 'I' on the TDI badge, but there's a lot more going on beneath the skin.

While 90-hp doesn't seem like much, the lightweight TDI's inline three-cylinder common-rail diesel engine produces 170 lb-ft of torque. (Photo: Volkswagen AG)

While 90 horsepower doesn't seem like a lot, the car's size and weight must be taken into consideration. Audi's genius ASF aluminum space frame is the backbone, ensuring a light, strong and safe shell. Under the hood is a potent inline three (yes, three cylinders) common-rail diesel engine that makes use of a new turbocharger that features variable turbine geometry. Backing up the 90 horses are 170 lb-ft of torque, made in part by a higher than normal turbo boost, high-flow intercooler, and a redesigned combustion chamber designed to optimize power and smooth out delivery. In the end the car reaches 100 km/h in just 10.9 seconds, with a top speed of 188 km/h.
