The FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) opened its 2012 season in Australia with a ringing endorsement of its Golden Rules campaign for safe driving — drivers from every team posed on the grid at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit holding cards bearing the rules.
The campaign comprises 10 key messages aimed at improving road safety. Supporters are asked to pledge to belt up, respect the highway code, pay attention, stop when tired, obey the speed limit, wear a helmet, drive sober, be courteous, protect their children and look after their vehicles.
Defending champion Sebastian Vettel and five former champions (Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikonnen) as well as stars from each of the 12 teams promoted the FIA safety agenda before pole-winning André Lotterer took to the grid in an Audi R18, along with co-drivers Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fassler. Jenson Button won the event.
The campaign aims to save five million lives on the world’s roads before 2020. Additional support came from a number of drivers in the 12 Hours of Sebring classic, which opened the WEC season this week.
