We had our first contact today with the Bentley Bentayga as part of the week of celebration to mark the 70th anniversary of Decarie Motors, the sole Bentley dealership in Eastern Canada.
What a pleasant surprise to discover this new British exotic SUV, which is blazing the trail for others to come in this market segment in the coming months. These include the Urus from Lamborghini, and new models currently being developed by both Aston Martin and Rolls Royce.
To give you an idea of where this segment situates itself, the Bentley Bentayga positions itself a cut above the Porsche Cayenne, and even the Range Rover and Tesla Model X.
To earn its super-luxury stripes, the Bentayga incorporates the finest leather upholstery, colours and finishes down to the smallest detail. Even in this super-high-end class with its sky-high standards, Bentley succeeds quite spectacularly.
On the road, the Bentley Bentayga offers power to spare thanks to a 600-horsepower W12 engine that provides truly awesome acceleration, taking just 4.0 seconds to go from 0-100 km/h. Top speed is in the neighborhood of 300 km/h.
For all that, what surprises most about the Bentayga is the level of comfort it provides on the road, floating as if on a cloud and delivering surprising handling for a 2,400kg SUV. The possibility of adjusting the suspension and the traction control system makes off-road driving a breeze, as well. A car made to measure, in other words, for heading for that remote salmon-fishing spot in a cocoon of comfort that rivals that of a large limousine.
Retail price: $275,000. If you pre-order, which is recommended given the seemingly endless array of options and finishes, expect a wait of roughly 3 months.
We’ll be back in a few weeks with a full review. More to come on Auto123.com…
