Motivated by its new strategic plan and Transport Canada's Urban Transportation Showcase Program (with the financial collaboration of the Quebec Department of Transport), the Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) has modified its mission statement to include a commitment toward sustainable development. The STM announced, among other things, that it will purchase biodiesel-electricity hybrid buses in the next few months.

The STM will put eight hybrid buses into service in order to evaluate their environmental performance in various weather conditions. These eco-friendly vehicles will then be compared to conventionally-powered buses on the same exact routes. Montrealers will be able to see them in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce/Côte-des-Neiges borough as early as January 2008. This initiative could represent a yearly greenhouse gas reduction of 330 tons.

Biodiesel for the others...
In addition, the STM will take the necessary steps to progressively start fuelling its entire bus fleet with biofuel. If everything goes as planned, the first biodiesel-powered vehicles will hit the streets of Montreal by 2008. Again, this measure will result in a yearly greenhouse gas reduction of 7,000 tons -- about the same amount produced by 1,400 buses that travel 20,000 kilometres each.
