BMW’s North American division announced this week it would be launching a public awareness campaign across the U.S. against the dangers of distracted driving.

Dubbed “DON’T TXT & DRIVE - When the Engine Starts the Texting Stops," the campaign will include print, radio, television and online adds as well as material in BMW dealerships throughout the year.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood, one of the most active advocates of stricter measures to eliminate the thousands of needless deaths that result from distracted driving every year, has commended BMW’s efforts and hope other automakers will follow suit.

The television spot demonstrates “the contradiction between being an overprotective parent and the carelessness of texting while driving,” without reinventing the wheel, however.

Online, the words “text messaging is very distracting” in giant capital letters will make it difficult to read the information on the desired sites, illustrating how much texting can block a driver’s field of vision.
