Anonymous sources told Automotive News Europe that BMW has hired former Opel product chief Frank Weber, who recently was the lead engineer for the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid. It's a bold move that gives the German automaker a huge boost as it goes forward with the launch of its i3 full-electric car and i8 plug-in hybrid for 2013.

Weber is a German native who studied engineering at Darmstadt University. He held several leading positions at the technical development centre in Ruesselsheim and worked for General Motors and Opel in the Volt/Ampera project.

Weber will now report to Klaus Draeger, BMW's head of research and development.
