There's also a clever toy that slides the luggage compartment cover forward whenever the driver opens the back window (but not the tailgate) to allow for easier loading of grocery bags and so on.

Practical as all this may be, the 325ixT is also billed by the Munich firm as the most "open" wagon in the world, thanks to a "huge panorama roof offering almost the same feeling as a convertible."

But this wouldn't be a BMW if it didn't have the kind of suspension that you'd find among the greatest in the world if you could drive the car fast enough legally.

But you can't, so you'll have to settle for bragging rights to what BMW calls the "the most agile suspension in its class."

The new double-joint aluminium front axle ensures an optimum ba¬lance of driving dynamics and motoring comfort, BMW says. "Combining truly outstanding directional stability with particularly low roll noise, this axle concept and design is even more convincing than the already excellent front axle featured on the former model. And despite its lower weight, it makes a significant contribution to the car's high standard of all-round stiffness."

Overall, the Touring comes with basically the same chassis and sus¬pen¬sion as the sedan, says BMW, but the specific set-up has been modified to meet the requirements of a station wagon.

The most useful of the techno-toys in this model continues to be the stability control system, which should do its usual good job of keeping the car on the road when it's been over-driven for the conditions.

The interior is said to match the exterior "by a combination of convex and concave surfaces creating an ambience of controlled dynamism and sheer lightness."

The cockpit "conveys a truly thrilling driving ex¬perience, classic circular instruments symbolising driving pleasure of the highest standard. All functions required for driving are inte¬grat¬ed either on or directly around the steering wheel, with the most im¬por¬tant driving and comfort information being provided directly in the driver's line of vision."

The bottom-line message on the 325ixT from BMW is that it "meets virtually all transportation requirements and at the same time offers driving pleasure of the highest calibre."
