The engine is a 16 valve, 1.6-litre unit and will be available with an optional Steptronic automatic transmission. Exact performance numbers are still unknown, and indeed BMW officials were quizzing auto journalists at the program about how high they should be. Very, very high, was the general response.
Mini Cooper will launch with 14 exterior color choices, with either black or white roof and exterior mirrors. Fifteen-inch aluminum wheels will be standard, with rims in either white or silver, and there'll be a wide range of chrome trim.
Inside, the design is a modern interpretation of the simple and straightforward look of the original Mini, with its characteristic centre speedometer in the middle of the dashboard. Seats will be available with either leather upholstery or a choice of fabrics.
The most amazing part of the interior design is that Mini Cooper's famous toggle switches have made the journey through the time machine intact. Somehow, the car's designers managed to fashion these so they pass the crash safety regulations that forced them out in the first place.
Wide-opening doors, remote control central locking, an adjustable steering column and driver's seat height adjustment help ensure that Mini Cooper "is extremely practical and adaptable for driver and passengers." The "boot" can be opened remotely and rear seats fold separately.
