BROADVIEW, Ill., -- Parallel parking a vehicle in a tight space may not be easy. Despite taking extra care and checking all mirrors, there is always the possibility of an obstacle in your path.

To help drivers avoid a rear end collision, Bosch recently introduced Bosch Park Assist(TM), a premium retrofit warning system using ultrasonic sensors. Based on intelligent technology, this system alerts drivers via sight and sound warnings that begin when the vehicle is approximately five feet away from an obstacle. Bosch is the world's largest supplier of automotive parts and systems to automakers and the aftermarket. www.boschautoparts.com

"Although drivers must always remain visually alert and on the lookout for people and objects in their path, Bosch Park Assist can be helpful any time we operate a vehicle in reverse," said Kenneth Brom, Park Assist Product Manager for Bosch. "It's like having an extra pair of eyes watching out for you when parallel parking or backing out of a driveway. It alerts you to unseen or difficult-to-see objects you are approaching such as pillars, posts, fences and bicycles as well as the presence of adults or children behind the vehicle."

The Bosch Park Assist system is available as a complete aftermarket kit, ready to install on most vehicles. It features an electronic control unit, interior LED display, and four ultrasonic sensors that are integrated into the rear bumper. Each sensor provides a 120-degree field of detection. When driving in reverse, the sensors transmit short sound pulses that are then reflected by objects located within five feet of the vehicle. The reflected pulses are displayed on a dash mounted LED screen, accompanied by a distinct audible sound.

The intensity of the warning increases as the bumper comes closer to the object. The warning signal ceases only when the vehicle stops and the distance between the bumper and object remains constant. An optional switch deactivates the system such as when towing a trailer or camper.

The Park Assist kit provides different setting angles for positioning the sensors that can be used with all standard plastic bumper covers. All components are powered by an electronic control unit (ECU) mounted inside the trunk of the vehicle.
