With total sales for 2010 expected to reach 3.45 million vehicles, Brazil is set to become the fourth largest car market in the world behind China, the United States and Japan.

Incidentally, the South American country has approximately one vehicle per seven residents, making it a very attractive market for automakers. Europe and the U.S., in contrast, are now extremely saturated.

Which brands are the most popular in Brazil? Fiat leads the way with a 23.1 market share, followed by Volkswagen and General Motors at 22.7 and 21.2 percent, respectively.

In terms of manufacturing, Brazil is the sixth largest vehicle producer in the world, turning out 3.6 million units under 17 different brands.

That's all good news for the country, but the panorama could change if Brazil's currency, the real, continues to soar against the dollar and the euro. That would make Brazilian exported vehicles increasingly expensive and slow the growth of the auto sector down there.
