Should Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz start to worry?
Cadillac is toying with the idea of introducing diesel engines in the hopes of getting back on top of the luxury car game and gaining a new competitive edge.

The announcement came last week from the brand's marketing vice president, Don Butler, during the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. He said that a diesel engine was under consideration for foreign markets.

With this move, Cadillac would step on the toes of Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz which all currently offer diesels.

Diesel technology represents a simple yet effective solution to help automakers meet the tougher fuel economy standards that will soon come into effect, while boosting the performance and efficiency of their vehicles.

Butler also left the door open to a possible return of diesel engines in the United States.

Back in the '80s, General Motors tried to sell a diesel-powered V8 in Oldsmobile and Cadillac vehicles, but major reliability issues doomed any chance of their success.
