Highlighting its commitment to use renewable fuels, the Canadian government announced new regulations today that will require gasoline to contain 5 % renewable fuel as of December 15, 2010.
"This federal 5 per cent requirement is estimated to result in a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of one megatonne per year over and above the reductions attributable to existing provincial requirements—the equivalent of taking a quarter million vehicles off the road," said the Environment Minister, John Baird.
These regulations have been adopted in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 % from 2005 levels by 2020. In addition, the initiative will encourage the production of biofuel in Canada, creating jobs in this sector as well as the agricultural community and stimulating the economy.
