Canadian NASCAR: Scott Steckly takes pole at season opener

The defending NASCAR Canadian Tire champion Scott Steckly earned pole after qualification runs held Saturday for the upcoming Vortex Brake Pads 200 at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

With a time of 83.922s lap for an average speed of 105.484 mph, the veteran established a new track record for the series, the old record being held by two-time champion Andrew Ranger.

Second fastest was J.R. Fitzpatrick with a time of 84.092s (105.270 mph), while full-time returnee Andrew Ranger qualified third with a lap of 84.106s (105.253 mph).

Veterans D.J. Kennington and Ron Beauchamp Jr. completed the top 5.

The Vortex Brake Pads 200 is set to take the green flag at 1:30 pm ET on Sunday afternoon.
