It was a nerve-racking day for many «Go or go home» drivers today at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, more for Canadian driver Patrick Carpentier (Dodge No 10) who had to stand out the first two races of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season.
Carpentier was to start last for qualifying but that served him well as the cooler air helped him gain the twelfth spot on the starting grid. Also Patrick was the fastest of the Rookies.
But it came as no surprise to see young sensation Kyle Busch (Camry No 18) take the pole position with a speed of 182.352 mph. Last week winner in California, Carl Edwards (Ford No 99), was second with a speed of 181.586 mph. Veteran Mark Martin (Chevy No 8) was third followed by Jeff Gordon (Chevy No 24) and Mike Skinner (Camry No 27), the later driving the ex-Villeneuve ride.
Series champ Jimmie Johnson (Chevy No 48) will start 33rd. A.J. Allmendinger (Camry No 84), Joe Nemechek (Chevy No 78), John Andretti (Chevy No 34) and Johnny Sauter (Ford No 21) did not qualify.
