Are we not worthy? Yet another manufacturer has announced the upcoming European introduction of a new diesel-powered model that will not be available to North Americans.
This time, it's Porsche- and the model in question is the Cayenne. A capable and powerful SUV, it will carry an optional diesel engine under its hood from February 2009 forward. The engine is sourced from Audi, and consists of a three-liter turbocharged V6 with 240 horsepower and an average consumption of just over 9L / 100km. Porsche says that their stake in the Volkswagen Group has opened up doors for the use of this diesel engine.
Aided by a fuel-sipping six-speed tiptronic gearbox, the diesel powered Cayenne will emit C02 at a rate of just 244 grams per kilometer while delivering athletic performance and instant throttle response.
The German automaker is working to trim down fuel consumption on its other models, with technologies like direct fuel injection and double-clutch transmissions. A hybrid powered Cayenne is in the works as well.
Shoppers in Canada and the USA can consider the upcoming BMW X5 xDrive35d or Mercedes-Benz ML 320 Bluetec if interested in a premium clean-diesel SUV.
