Geely International Holdings, Inc. is looking for partners and hoping to work together with foreign parts companies and carmakers to enter a new phase of growth. According to Geely Chairman Li Shufu, they'll even consider Japanese partnerships.
"We started off building and selling cheap cars, but now we are changing," he told a pre-Tokyo Auto Show conference earlier this week.
"We are very, very eager to form alliances," he added, noting a respect for Japanese automakers and a willingness to cooperate with any who may show interest.
Unlike the North American auto industry which is characterized by several large and powerful players, the Chinese auto industry is highly fragmented and consists of many small, often family-run manufacturers with no company in particular doing an exceptionally better job than anyone else.
Alliances, then, would be a key factor for an automaker wishing to expand considerably- and Geely may be in a position to do just that. They're one of China's most ambitious car companies and currently have no local partners.
Next year, they want to double capacity and set up assembly plants in North America and Europe with the goal of expanding out of the fiercely competitive home market. Expansion in China alone will bump capacity to around 600,000 vehicles annually.
