Porsche is expanding its offering of multimedia systems that can be installed in its older cars. A new generation of the Porsche Classic Communication Management Plus (PCCM Plus) is tailored for select 911, Boxster and Cayman models from the 2009-to-2016 model-years.
Porsche says the new system is available immediately at Canadian Porsche Centres, priced at $2,844.32 CAD. The automaker recommends having it installed professionally at one of its dealerships, although it doesn’t specify the cost that comes with doing so.
Two versions depending on the generation
The new PCCM Plus comes in two versions adapted to the vehicles in question. The first targets the 997.2 and 987.2 generation models, which Porsche groups into the 2009-2013 period. The second addresses the 991.1 and 981 generations for the 2012-2016 model-years.
The unit features a high-resolution 7-inch touchscreen. With the system in place, users retain access to vehicle settings and the use of multi-function steering wheel controls, where equipped.
Navigation prompts as well as media information can also display in the instrument cluster. The system remains compatible with existing audio setups, an important detail for owners with cars featuring optional audio systems.
Porsche notes, however, that available functions vary depending on the model and its equipment.
A wireless smartphone connection
Among the primary new additions, the PCCM Plus enables wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, meaning there’s no need to plug in the phone. The connection relies on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies. In the case of Android Auto, a compatible phone and an active data plan are required.
Bluetooth audio playback includes track title and artist display. AM, FM and HD Radio are also included on the menu.
Furthermore, the system features a nano-SIM card slot and supports 4G connectivity. Certain features require internet access, notably over-the-air navigation map updates. YouTube viewing is also available when the vehicle is parked.
Driving-oriented features
Navigation adds satellite imagery and a feature called Scenic Roads, which allows drivers to prioritize scenic, winding routes when plotting a course.
The system can also display speed limits using map data. Onboard computer screens allow drivers to monitor oil temperature and oil pressure.
For the Boxster and Cayman, the PCCM Plus adds a visual representation of obstacles detected by the existing parking assistance system. Owners can also customize the on-screen rendering of their vehicle to match its exterior appearance.
