Conclusion
We really liked this confrontation because all four cars are both satisfying and affordable. There might not be as many souped-up hatchbacks as in the '80s, but there are still some that have made it through the new millennium.
We think that the future looks bright for smaller and sporty machines. With high gas prices, people will be looking to downsize and purchase more frugal machines, but won't give up driving pleasure. The Mitsubishi Colt CZT we tested in January 2008 is a good indication of what might be available in Canada within the next few years. We can't wait to set up a comparison test of 150-to-200 horsepower subcompacts.
For now, all four cars tested here will provide high levels of performance and entertainment. Some are raw and full of character, some are refined and mild-mannered, but all of them will make you smile.
