Volkswagen driver Nasser Al-Attiyah won today’s stage of the famous Dakar raid to close on race leader, former World Rally driver Carlos Sainz.
In the 600-km stage held today – the longest of the Dakar this year - Al-Attiyah powered ahead of X-raid BMW driver Stephane Peterhansel to win the stage victory.
Claiming victory helped Al-Attiyah to reduce Sainz’s overall lead to just 11 minutes.
Al-Attiyah now leads his VW teammate Mark Miller by 11 minutes in their battle for second place. The American lost time today lost to navigation problems.
The Dakar stopped for a mid-race break and will resume Sunday with the Antofagasta-Copiapo stage.
