Robby Gordon (Hummer) was forced to retire moments before the 4th leg of the Rally Dakar on Wednesday after a mechanical failure.

The American driver broke a wheel when he was reaching the start of the special stage of the day. Therefore, hewas not able to take the start of the stage in time, and was out of the race.

It is a first retirement in the Dakar for Gordon since his debut in the event in 2006. He was classified 3rd in 2009 and 4th in 2010. His team mate, former Formula 1 driver Eliseo Salazar from Chile, is still in the race.

Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz (Volkswagen) secured his third stagewin in four days.

Stephane Peterhansel (BMW) dominated the early part of the stage, but the Frenchman lost a lot of time because of a puncture, and dropped down to third behind Sainz and Nasser Al-Attiyah.

In overall standings, Carlos Sainz leads by 4’24 over his teammate Al Attiyah, and 5’41 ahead of Peterhansel.
