Nasser Al Attiyah (Volkswagen) took victory in the third stage of the 2011 Dakar Rally on Tuesday, between San Miguel de Tucuman and San Salvador de Jujuy.
The driver from Qatar, who secured his first stage win in this year’s Dakar, set the best performance ahead of his team mate Carlos Sainz, who still leads provisional classification after his wins in the two first legs, and Stephane Peterhansel’s BMW.
Al Attiyah moved up to second in provisional classification, 3’11 behind Sainz, while Peterhansel lies now in third, 3’26 behind. But Al Attiyah was still a little disapointed after he suffered a lack of power on his VW engine after 200 km.
Holowczyc (BMW) and both Volkswagen driven, De Villiers and Miller took 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. Today, the Dakar will cross the Cordillera de los Andes mountains to reach Chile in the afternoon and the city of Calama.
