Somewhat in keeping with the trends of the 2009 auto shows and automotive reviews, the North American International Auto Show has declared the Chevrolet Volt and Ford Explorer the Car and Truck of the Year.

The Volt was up against the Audi A8, Buick Regal, Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Sonata (2.0T/Hybrid), Infiniti M37 and 56, Jaguar XJ, Kia Optima, Mazda2, Nissan Juke, Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen Jetta and Volvo S60.

The Explorer was pitted against the Dodge Durango, Ford Edge, Honda Odyssey, Hyundai Tucson, Infiniti QX56, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kia Sorento and Sportage, Lincoln MKS, Mercedes-Benz R-Class, Porsche Cayenne, Toyota Sienna and Volkswagen Touareg.

The jury was comprised of 49 Canadian and American automotive journalists working for Internet sites, newspapers, magazines and radio stations. In November, they narrowed the initial list of finalists down to six candidates in an initial vote. They then voted a second time to determine the winners.

In 2010 the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Fort Transit Connect had taken home the honours.
