Mercedes-Benz showed off its SLS AMG E-Cell in Detroit, a 100% electric, high-performance exoticar that will eventually be on sale and which demonstrates where the company is heading with their “AMG Performance 2015” strategy. The objective here is to reduce both fuel consumption and harmful emissions.
For Benz, a green car does not necessarily mean less power and less driving pleasure. That’s why the SLS AMG E-Cell is blessed with four electric motors, each located near a wheel and that provide a total output of 526 horsepower and 649 lb-ft of torque. The 0-100 km/h sprint is accomplished in 4 seconds, which is comparable to the regular SLS equipped with its 563-horse V8 and its 3.7-second 0-100 km/h capability.
Integrating a motor near each wheel allows for an all-wheel drive layout. According to the automaker, this will provide the car with a high level of dynamic driving characteristics while still being able to keep its composure, no matter what Mother Nature will throw at it.
The SLS AMG E-Cell uses a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack with an energy content of 48 kWh and a capacity of 40 Ah. As with the case with most electric vehicles, the car benefits from a regenerative braking system.
Apart from its gullwing doors that draw a lot of attention, the flat yellow colour chosen for the car’s sheetmetal can burn your retina and is more than noticeable in the Mercedes-Benz stand. On the outside, the German hot rod received minor modifications such as new LED headlights and improved aerodynamics.
Since the SLS AMG E-Cell is a pure electric, its instrument panel was modified to display information such as estimated range and battery charge level. The centre stack has also been revised and now incorporates a 10-inch touch-screen.
There is no scheduled date yet for mass production, and the car’s range is still unspecified, as the automaker is currently keeping some details for themselves.
