Toyota announced today at the Detroit Auto Show that the Prius will become a family of vehicles, thanks to the addition of the new mid-size Prius v and the Prius c Concept.

The Prius v is destined for young, growing families, sharing its platform and Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain with the current-generation Prius. Compact on the outside, but promising lots of space inside for five occupants, the Prius v will offer 50% more interior volume (971 litres) compared to the today’s sedan.

According to the EPA, the Prius v should consume 5.6 L/100 km around town (42 US mpg) and 6.2 L/100 km on the highway (38 US mpg). Four driving modes (Normal, Power, Eco and EV) will be offered, as well as standard push-button start, electronic gear selector, hill start assist system and rear view camera.

Options will include LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, a pre-collision warning system, an advanced park assist system and a resin panoramic sunroof with power retractable sun shades.

Occupants will be protected by seven airbags, a high-strength cabin and an energy-absorbing body structure. Like all 2011 Toyota models, the 2012 Prius v will receive the Star Safety System, and will hit dealerships at the end of summer 2011.

The Prius c Concept is a city car that targets young singles and couples who desire an eco-friendly and fuel-efficient vehicle. The presented model will inspire a new model of the Prius family that will be launched in the first half of 2012.

Toyota also added the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which will offer superior fuel economy and added EV driving capability. According to the manufacturer, the car can drive about 20 kilometres at speeds up to 100 km/h on electric power, with the help of its lithium-ion battery pack that can be recharged in 3 hours in a 110-volt outlet and 1.7 hours in a 220-volt socket.
