Taking a leadership stance in diesel technology has allowed Mercedes Benz to create a four-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that cranks out 320 horsepower and 730 newton metres of torque. That's German for about 540 foot pounds, if this author's math is correct.

Those numbers are good for 0-60 runs of just 6.6 seconds, and highway fuel consumption ratings of around 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres. With its 90 litre fuel tank, the S420 CDI boasts a range of around 1000 kilometres.

Output is handled by the carmakers 7G-Tronic gearbox, with seven gears and a column shifter. Shift buttons are also fitted, and the transmission promises appropriate ratios to harness the engines tremendous power even at low-rpm situations for quiet and efficient driving.

Standard equipment on the flagship sedan includes adaptive brake lights, brake assist, AIRMATIC suspension with Active Damping System (ADS), automatic climate control and 17" wheels.

Customers wishing to experience the next generation of luxurious diesel power can order themselves an S420 CDI now, with deliveries starting later in the month.
