If you often spend time driving in the wrong way of traffic, either you got your driver's licence from a cereal box or you need to have your eyes corrected. In any case, it's safe to say you're one of the most distracted people out there.

Fortunately for you and other motorists you share the road with, Toyota has a solution.

Starting June 1, 2011, the Japanese automaker will add a function to its onboard navigation systems that gives on-screen and voice alerts to wrong-way drivers. Using GPS, it monitors vehicle direction on highways and selected toll roads, including at tollgates, service area ramps, turn-offs and junctions.

Toyota reports that approximately 1,000 wrong-way driving incidents occur annually in Japan, with a higher percentage of senior drivers involved than in other kinds of traffic incidents.

That's nice from Toyota, don't you think? Well, maybe a bit funny, too. Just remember: if every other driver moves in the opposite direction, there's probably a good reason. Wake up!
