In spite of a disappointing end to his 2010 DTM season in China, when he slipped from first to third place in the driver standings, no one expected Bruno Spengler's seat at Mercedes-HWA to be in jeopardy.
As it turns out, the team has yet to make an official announcement because the Quebec driver's previous contract actually ended last fall and negotiations for a new one are still underway.
Talks between Mercedes and Spengler began last summer but have since trailed off. The latter hired seasoned agent Werner Heinz, former manager of Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld, to help speed up the process.
According to German magazine Speed-magazin.de, Spengler has been contacted by BMW, which will make its DTM debut in 2012 along with the new technical rules.
Obviously, BMW is looking to score big names from Mercedes and/or Audi in order to accelerate the development of its new DTM car.
Our sources tell us that the Munich-based company is currently trying to lure engineers and mechanics as well.
Spengler is scheduled to meet with Mercedes brass on Tuesday, February 15th, to finalize the new contract. No one from either side agreed to comment.
Stay tuned!
