In DTM action, Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller set today the best time in the first free practice session at the Nürburgring ahead of Bruno Spengler’s C Class Mercedes.

Although rain was in the forecast for Friday, the first session was run in bright sunshine, on a dry track. But this could change dramatically as rain may well fall on Saturday on the German track.

Mike Rockenfeller set the best time of the day. The German driver, who made his DTM return at the Norisring after his huge crash in Le Mans 24 Hours, emerged fastest today ahead of point standings’ leader, Canadian Bruno Spengler.

Surprisingly, David Coulthard managed to put his 2008-spec C Class Mercedes in third position. The former Formula 1 driver stood on top of the timing charts for the major part of the session, only to be beaten by Rockenfeller and Spengler in the final fifteen minutes of the session.

Renger Van der Zande was also quick aboard his 2008 C Class Mercedes, and the Dutch captured fourth position in front of Mattias Ekstrom’s Audi.

Martin Tomczyk, who stands second in provisional standings, was 10th in his 2008 Audi A4.
