German web site Motorsport-guide.com claims that Japanese car manufacturer Nissan wants the FIA to support the new DTM regulations, set to be introduced in 2012.
"We need a global organisation such as the FIA to be involved to make the category credible," said Shoichi Miyatani, President of Nissan/Nismo Motorsport, to Autosport.
The DTM is currently sanctioned by ITR e.V., a company that coordinates the planning, organisation and staging of the DTM races.
The Japanese Super GT series is currently negotiating with the DTM organisation, ITR to introduce the new regulations.
"It needs not to be just in Germany and Japan, it must be global," said Miyatani.
The merger of rules between DTM and Super GT has however been hit by a financial setback, according to Autosport, due to the recent earthquake disaster in Japan.
