The final spurt in the title fight starts in earnest at the seventh round of the international touring car series (DTM) that will be held at the Nürburgring on 27 July, it will be the last German DTM race before the finale at Hockenheim. Three international events at Brands Hatch, Barcelona and Le Mans are still to run before the big showdown in October.
The DTM championship is dominated by two Audi drivers; Timo Scheider (40 points) and defending champion Mattias Ekström (35 points). Following the leaders are the three Mercedes-Benz young guns led by Jamie Green (34 points), Paul di Resta (29 points) and Bruno Spengler (26 points).
Of the Mercedes drivers, Bruno Spengler has been the most successful of the past two seasons at this German circuit.
"I won at the Nürburgring in 2006 and last year I finished second. I like this track. It would be great if I could reduce the gap to the top of the ranking at this circuit," declared the Canadian.
Last year's race was won by Martin Tomczyk while his teammates Mattias Ekstrom and Timo Scheider finished 3rd and 4th.
Because of the live broadcast of the Tour de France's final weekend, the qualifying for the seventh race of the 2008 DTM at the Nürburgring this coming weekend will start only at 18h48 instead of 13h28; Sunday's race will begin at 17h35 instead of 14h00 (German time).
