Wilmington, DE - The following can be attributed to Nicholas C. Fanandakis, group vice president -- DuPont Applied BioSciences:

"With a view on the biofuels industry that ranges from the advanced agricultural seed we sell through Pioneer Hi-Bred to the new advanced biofuels technologies we are bringing to market including cellulosic ethanol and biobutanol, we find ourselves with a unique perspective on the Obama administration announcement to create a Biofuels Interagency Working Group.

"We applaud the administration's support for biofuels and the cooperation we continue to see among the government agencies critical to this young industry's success. Our dialogue with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is valuable, and the ability to do this through the common forum of this working group will be additive.

"DuPont shares the vision that the President has consistently expressed that biofuels have an important role to play in reducing America's reliance on imported energy and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, and are proud of our contributions to this effort. By providing more than 170 Pioneer® brand ethanol hybrid varieties that are tailored to ethanol production, we are helping America's first generation biorefineries produce more fuel on less land. Construction is under way through our joint venture with Danisco to build a cellulosic demonstration facility that is laying the groundwork for commercial production using our technology as early as 2012. Our partnership with BP will deliver a new, advanced biofuel to the market - biobutanol - which is designed to blend seamlessly with the fuel system, saving infrastructure costs.

"We look forward to working with the EPA, DOE, USDA, and other stakeholders to further develop a sustainable biofuels industry that fuels America while helping us combat climate change. We also look forward to working with the President and the Congress to ensure that policy helps us get there, providing the framework to encourage consistent support for the kind of cutting-edge science and entrepreneurial innovation that DuPont and others are bringing to the biofuels market.

"There are several challenges ahead, perhaps none more important than the balance of energy security, the environment agriculture productivity, the well-being of rural areas and global human nutrition. Along with our solar and wind technologies, crop protection chemicals and our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, our seeds and fuel technologies are helping the American farmer thrive, producing food, energy and jobs in an environmentally sustainable way.

"There are important decisions needed to evolve to an advanced biofuels industry. We stand ready to work with the Obama administration to continue this dialogue and create the sustainable biofuels sector that will deliver to society a diversified energy supply. It's not just the right thing to do, it is a business imperative as well."
