Edmonton Student Wins Canada's Top Environmental Scholarship
Toronto, ON, Earth Day, April 22, 2004. Jessica Moe of Edmonton, AB is thenational winner of the 2004 Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program,celebrating and rewarding environmentally-minded students in Canada.
As the national winner of the Outstanding Environmental Achievement Award,Ms. Moe has distinguished herself for her notable accomplishments inenvironmental community service, academics and extracurricularparticipation. "Jessica has demonstrated her passion for the environmentwith extraordinary commitment and achievements," says Jed Goldberg,President of Earth Day Canada.
In addition to being selected as a Western Canada region winner of a $5,000Toyota Earth Day Scholarship, Ms. Moe was presented with the nationalOutstanding Environmental Achievement Award and a Panasonic CF50 Toughbook?notebook computer at a National Awards Ceremony held at the Conservatory ofAllan Gardens in Toronto, ON.
Ms. Moe, a Grade 12 student at Ross Sheppard High School in Edmonton, AB isalready well experienced in developing and implementing projects related toenvironmental and social issues. She has initiated her school's "ProjectGreen" program and recycling project, co-founded and managed the localYouth Coalition for Peace and Social Justice, organized the "Third WorldDinner" to raise funds and build awareness, and founded the schoolnewspaper?"The Issue". Ms. Moe also finds the time to lead the studentdebate club and participate in other school clubs and several athleticteams. Despite Ms. Moe's extracurricular leadership and involvement, shehas maintained an honours with distinction average ? currently 97% ? in theextremely challenging International Baccalaureate Programme. Ms. Moe'scareer objective is to become a doctor specializing in population healthand work with Médecins Sans Frontères.
The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program was established to celebrate andencourage environmental commitment among students. It is an entrancescholarship offered to students attending a Canadian university or college,or Québec junior college in any chosen field of study ? because, as KenjiTomikawa, President and CEO, Toyota Canada Inc., says, "Futureenvironmental leaders will come from a broad range of academicbackgrounds."
