Several technical directors of rival teams have refused to rule out lodging a protest after the FIA cleared McLaren's controversial aerodynamic trick for the 2010 season.

Renault's technical director Bob Bell delivered a scathing verdict on the innovative aerodynamic system McLaren has implemented on its MP4-25s.

The air duct is clearly visible on top of the monocoque.

Asked about the monocoque air inlet that is triggered by the drivers' left knee on the MP4-25, Irishman Bell said the Woking based team had "driven a concourse through the spirit of the regulations".

He said it was a "joke" and "nonsense" that the FIA had green lighted the "completely illegal" innovation, which will now spark an "arms race" within pit lane.

Lotus technical chief Mike Gascoyne is still unsure why the duct system has been approved.

“I still believe it's a moveable aerodynamic device because the configuration of the [car's] aerodynamics are changing," Gascoyne explained.

"Whether the driver is doing with it his knee or not, they [the aerodynamics] are not the same all the time so therefore it must be a moveable aero device.
