In front of his public, Mark Webber set the best time in the morning in the Red Bull RB7, but Jenson Button set the best lap of the day ahead of the other McLaren of Lewis Hamilton in the afternoon.
The Red Bulls were in front for the first free practice session of the season. Mark Webber was ahead of Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso was third in his Ferrari, one second down from Mark Webber.
Karun Chandhok hit the wall during the sfirst ession, and the front of the Lotus T128 was damaged. Meanwhie, the two Hispania drivers did not leave their garages.
During the second free practice session, the two McLaren swere constantly on top of the charts, with Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton swapping first position. Only Michael Schumacher was able to put his Mercedes W02 on top of the standings for just a few minutes, but eventually finished the day in sixth place.
Fernando Alonso wasagain third, one tenth of the second down to Jenson Button, and followed by the two Red Bulls. Rookie Sergio Perez was eighth fastest of the day in his Sauber-Ferrari.
Running some six seconds off the pace, the Marussia Virgin drivers could be victims of the 107% qualifying rule on Saturday.
The Hispania mechanics worked hard to finish the two F111 in time to allow Vitantonio Liuzzi to compete one installation lap.
