Mika Häkkinen
During the 1995 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide, Mika Häkkinen’s McLaren suffered a tire failure during free practice, which resulted in him crashing heavily into the wall. He was critically injured and was saved only due to an emergency tracheotomy that was performed by the side of the track. The Finn fully recovered and was fit to race again in 1996, claiming the world title in 1998 and 99.
Nigel Mansell
A heavy qualifying accident at Suzuka in Japan for the penultimate race of the 1987 season severely injured Mansell's back (a spinal concussion). As a result, Mansell missed the remaining two races of the season. Months later, Mansell was back behind the wheel of the Judd-powered Williams. He finally clinched the world title in 1992.
