When Daniel Ricciardo was informed he would form a driver duo with Jean-Éric Vergne at Toro Rosso in 2012, he has eating dinner at his family residence in Perth, Australia.
"As soon as I had the phone down, after being told I was a full-time F1 driver, I jumped towards my mum and dad to tell them," Ricciardo remembers on Auto Motor und Sport's website.
"Now I know my plans for next year."
There was not a sweeter Christmas gift in the whole wide world for the young Australian. In 2012, he will begin his first full F1 campaign, beside a long-time, friendly rival.
"I get along very well with Jean-Éric [Vergne, who gets his first F1 break too next season], ever since our debut in the Red Bull Junior program. I even lived in his house for a while back in the karting days. It will be a good rivalry."
When the holidays come to an end, Ricciardo will be delighted to trade his warm Australia sun for the cold italian winter, because his doing the switch to better prepare ahead of the race season.
"My trainer told me to get some rest during the Christmas break, because I'm going to train hard. Ever since I know it's for F1, I can't wait to start suffering!"
