Local hero Fernando Alonso installed his Renault on top of the timing sheets on Friday afternoon in the second free practice session for the Grand Prix of Europe in Valencia.

Alonso has been quick all day long. The Spaniard set a series of fast laps when he collided with Nick Heidfeld’s BMW-Sauber when he was on his fastest lap.

Heidfeld slammed it as "just plain stupid".

The Brawns were back on form. Jenson Button emerged 2nd, followed by his teammate Rubens Barrichello.

The Williams duo of Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima also did well, taking 4th and 5th, respectively.

Kimi Raikkonen - Ferrari

And what about the Force India-Mercedes? Adrian Sutil was 6th in the afternoon while his experienced teammate Giancarlo Fisichella was 8th.

Swiss driver Sebastien Buemi complained on the radio of a burned right foot against his boiling-hot Toro Rosso carbon pedal.

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton had been near the pace in the morning, but he had to sit out almost all of the final session when he damaged his prototype McLaren front wing.

Renault rookie Romain Grosjean had a solid opening day of action with the 17th and 13th fastest times respectively, apparently on full tanks.

Returnee Luca Badoer was struggling for Ferrari, never higher than 18th on the time sheets. The Italian got also fined three times for pit lane speeding.
