Modern Formula 1 drivers are high-performance athletes. During each race, they have to spend two hours in sweltering heat in the cockpit of their cars and endure g-forces like those produced by a fighter jet.

Under braking, an F1 car generates some 5 Gs of negative acceleration. Temperatures can reach 60 degrees in the cockpit, and the driver can lose up to three to four litres of body fluid during a typical Grand Prix.

Keeping high levels of concentration despite the heat, the vibrations and the noise are also extremely challenging in such a harsh environment.

Mercedes Grand Prix driver Nico Rosberg is a fitness enthusiast. In this video, the 25-year old German driver shows how intense physical preparation really is.
