Well respected Japanese business publication, Nikkei wrote Wednesday May 15 that car manufacturer, Honda is extremely close to announcing its return to Formula 1 racing in 2015.

The rumour has been circulating for quite a while now, but this time it is taken up by a business publication and not a motorsport outlet.

In its news article, Nikkei says that Honda will provide new 1.6-litre turbo power units to team McLaren from 2015.

Honda president Takanobu Ito would make a public announcement about this within the next few days. Could it be during the prestigious Grand Prix of Monaco?

McLaren boss, Martin Whitmarsh always provided evasive answers about the extension of the contact that links the team to current engine supplier, Mercedes-Benz.

It is understood that since Mercedes has its own Formula 1 team, McLaren is no longer a prime partner of Mercedes and now has to pay for its engines.

McLaren ran Honda powered F1 cars between 1988 and 1992, clinching four World Drivers’ Championships.
